Walking Directions:

If you would like to also have a go at “Sound & Vision” caches on route the directions from the car park WP are: Park your car safely and walk towards the fishing pond with the notice board on your right (approx 80ft). Turn left and follow the path around the pond until just before you reach the bench (Approx 177ft). At dusk during the Spring & Summer months this bench is an ideal location to spot Bats feeding on insects rising from the dam. In the Spring you can also see 100’s of Frogs and Toads spawning in the shallow waters around the edge of the dam. Take a left away from the pond and follow the trodden path (popular with dog walkers) towards the edge of the wood (approx 360ft). On your right is the best blackberry bush in Wellow full of large ripe blackberries in late August, early September. Half way down the hill, take a sharp right turn over the stream using the ‘make shift’ railway sleeper bridge into the wood After leaving the wood take a left turn and follow the footpath down to the start of Wellow Park Woods (Approx 1/3 mile). The path has hawthorn and holly hedges on each side alive with young Rabbits in the spring time. Horses from the stables can often be found grazing in the fields to the right. This path can get a bit muddy after rain or in the winter months but don’t worry it gets much worse later on. On entering the woods you don’t have far to go (Approx 200ft) before you can hunt down the 2nd cache “Sound & Vision” (GC1W5EB). This cache is again themed around Video & Music. Share your favourite Films and Music with other Geocachers by leaving a CD or DVD in the cache. You are welcome to visit this cache as often as you like!

Quite interesting facts:

The beautiful Church of St. Swithin is believed to have been built around 1189, in the reign of King Richard 1st; and, despite major renovation works in 1810, in 1878 and also 1968-69, it retains many ancient features, including a small splayed light on the north wall which is dated 1190 and two fourteenth-century arches. If you hear the bells ringing on 19th September – known locally as‘Old Lady Day’- you will be experiencing another little part of the history of Wellow; this recalls the day when Lady Waldane, a visitor to Wellow Hall over 200 years ago, became lost whilst walking in Wellow woods. She followed the sound of church bells and arrived safely back at the Hall; in gratitude she bequeathed a sum of money to fund the ringing of the bells on each anniversary of her ‘rescue’
