This cache is the third of my WWII era ship puzzle caches.

The Destoryer Escort that fought like a battleship.

The USS Samuel B. Roberts was a John C. Butler-Class destoryer escort numbered DE-413. She was One of the two main US vessels in the Battle of Samar. This Battle started when the US escort carrier fleet Taffy 3 was attacked by the large Japanese Center Force. Two US ships the USS Samuel B. Roberts and the USS Johnston engaged the enemy. The dimunitive Roberts challenged the Japanese Heavy Curiser Chokai. The Roberts got within 2.5 mile of the Chokai and lauched 3 torpedoes. One of these torpedoes blew the Chokai's bow off. Enemy gunners couldn't score a hit on the Roberts because it was so small and so close. Finally after the Roberts had finished it attack run it turned around to head back when the Japanese battleship Congo scored a hit on her, blowing her #2 engine room to shreds. The order was given abroad the Roberts to abandon ship. At 10:05 AM one of the bravest ships in the US navy slipped below the waves...
