Geocache Description:

A cache, off the beaten path, in one of Lost Dogs favorite parks Windy Run

The first of the Lost Dogs was Pancho Villa. He was half Labrador, half golden retriever, and half water buffalo. Of course, any dog named Pancho Villa needs a partner in crime: a Labrador named General Pershing. Together these two dogs waged an endless battle in the woods of Windy Run Park and the Potomac Heritage Trail, rampaging through these woods several times a week for many years in the 1990s. They were active participants in CITO (even though they didn’t know what geocaching was at that time).

Windy Run is one of a series of fabulous parks in Arlington that reaches from Lorcum Lane / Military Road down to the Potomac Heritage trail. Frequented mainly by dog walkers and fishermen, these parks offer wonderful billy-goat trial like hikes. They all follow a stream that cascades over the Virginia cliffs in magnificent several 100 foot water falls. Down below, on the Potomac Heritage Trail, you can find odd large chunks of steel. From 1794 to 1938, there were active quarries along them there cliffs, quarrying what was known as Virginia Bluestone. Stone from these cliffs were used to build parts of Georgetown University, Hains Point, and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The Washington Post has a nice article on the history of these steel boilers and the cliffs. You will also be able to see in along these trails deer, red foxes, blue cranes, ducks, and other assorted wildlife. These trails are true hidden jems.

Pancho discovered the quantum theory of tennis-balls. At any point along these trails, he would momentarily disappear, and reappear with a tennis ball in his mouth. This scientific theory continues; while scoping out this cache, the Lost Dogs found an Ultimate Frisbee from Princeton High School (round abouts where Ultimate Frisbee was invented). While placing the cache, the Lost Dogs found a softball.

Eventually, the adventures of Pancho Villa and General Pershing had become so renown that Windy Run was honorary renamed “Pancho’s Park.” The “Windy Run” cache was one of the first caches the current generation of Lost Dogs found.
