Geschichte

Im 20. Jahrhundert wurden in den Steinbrüchen von Unterammergau am Scharten-Köpfel die sogenannten „Wetzsteine“ abgebaut. Wetzsteine waren flache, kieselsäurereiche Steine, die zum Schleife und Schärfen von Werkzeugen (insbesondere Sensen und Sicheln) verwendet wurden.

Die Auffaltung der Alpen begann vor 400 Millionen Jahren. Im Ammergauer Becken am nördlichen Alpenrand bildeten sich zu Beginn der Jurazeit mächtige Kalksteinabfolgen. Hierbei kam es zur Ablagerung von kieselsäurereichen Radiolariten.
In diesen als „Ammergauer Schichten“ bekannten Gesteinen findet man neben verschiedenen Mikrofossilien, auch häufig sogenannte „Deckel“ von Ammonitengehäusen (Aptychen).

Das steil aufgerichtete Gestein besteht aus feinkörnigen, teilweise auch mergeligen Kalksteinen, die mit Kieselsäure versetzt sind. Analysen ergaben einen SiO2-Gehalt von cirka 12,5%, also ein ideales Ausgangsmaterial für die Herstellung von Wetzsteinen. Auf diese Gesteinsschichten stieß man vermutlich schon im 15. Jahrhundert, als hier noch nach Gold und Silber geschürft wurde.

In der Schleifmühlklamm


Die Steinplatten für die Wetzsteinherstellung wurden mit Hilfe von Geräten aus Eisen, Bohrern oder auch mit Hilfe von Sprengungen aus dem Felsen herausgearbeitet. Nur 10% der geförderten Menge war zur Herstellung von Wetzsteinen geeignet, der Rest wurde an den „Halden“ entsorgt. Die eigentliche Form und Funktion des Wetzsteins erhielt er dann in den angrenzenden Schleifmühlen der Klamm.

Die seltene Ausprägung der Gesteinsschichten im Ammergauer Gebirge verhalf der Bevölkerung rasch zu einem gewissen Wohlstand und der Exporthandel mit Wetzsteinen nach Österreich, Ungarn und andere Länder an der Donau blüte auf. In guten Jahren wurden über 200 000 Wetzsteine abgesetzt.
Unterammergau hatte damals den Status als größter Wetzsteinproduzent in der ganzen Umgebung.

Der Absatzeinbruch und das Ende der Wetzsteinmacherei kamen im Laufe des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Ursache dafür waren die neuen, synthetisch hergestellten Wetzsteine, die Einführung von Mähmaschinen und der Wegfall der Absatzgebiete, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg dem Ostblock gehörten. Lediglich das Wappen von Unterammergau erinnert noch an die gute, alte Zeit der Wetzsteinmacher.

Kostenpflichtig Parken könnt ihr bei 47°36.594‘ E011°01.167‘ (2 Stunden für 0,50 Euro). Das Geotop ist dann ab dem Parkplatz ausgeschildert (Braunes Schild „Geologie erleben“).
Informationen zu allen Fragen findet Ihr auf den Weg durch die Schleifmühlklamm bei den weißen Informationsschildern und am Ziel bei N 47°36.343‘ E011°00.993‘. Wenn ihr am Geotop-Schild angekommen seid, folgt dem Weg nach oben durch die Klamm und haltet euch bei der Forststraße links. Hier kommt ihr dann wieder zurück zum Ausgangspunkt Euerer Tour. Wenn Ihr noch Zeit habt, könnt Ihr noch das Schleifmühlen-Museum besuchen. Für kulinarische Genüsse aus Bayern oder für den „Hunger danach“ steht Euch das Gasthaus Schleifmühle in nächster Nähe zur Verfügung.

Aufgabenstellung

Auf den Weg zur und durch die Schleifmühlklamm kommt ihr an zahlreichen weißen Informationstafeln vorbei, auf denen Ihr die Informationen zu den Fragen findet. Folgende vier Fragen, die nur vor Ort gelöst werden können, müssen beantwortet werden, bevor ihr den Earth-Cache bei geocaching.com eintragen dürft (nutz hierbei die Antwortfunktion bei geocaching.com oder schreibt an redsungermany@t-online.de).

1. Welcher Anteil eines Gesteins verleiht dem Wetzstein eine hohe Bruchfestigkeit und welcher Anteil verleiht ihm die Schärfe?

2. Welche hohe „Geschwindigkeit“ lässt eine ideale Nutzung als Energieträger für die verschiedenen Wetzsteinmühlen zu?

3. 1865 existierten 32 Schleifmühlen in Unterammergau. Wie viel Familien lebten von der Wetzsteinmacherei?

4. Wie viel Abbaustellen von Wetzsteinschichten sind am nördlichen Alpenraum bekannt?

History

In the 20 th century in the quarries of Unterammergau at the Scharten-Köpfel, so called „Wetzsteine“ were mined. “Wetzsteine” were plane, high silica stones, which were used for sharpening of tools, especially for scythes and sickles.

The upfolding of the Alps started 400 million years ago. In the beginning of the Jurassic time mighty limestone sequences built themselves in the Ammergauer basin north of the edge of the Alps. This resulted in deposition of silica-rich “Radiolariten”. In these rocks, known as “Ammergauer Schichten” you will find various micro-fossils, but also so called “Deckel” of ammonite bodies/boxes (Aptychen)

The steeply raised rocks consist of fine-grained and partly marly limestones, which are added with silica acid. Analysis showed a SiO2 content of 12.5%, which is an ideal base material for the production of the “Wetz”-stones. This rock formation was probably found in the 15th century, a time in which the people still mined for gold and silver.

The plates fort he „Wetz“-stone production were released from the rocks with devices of ferrous, drills or by detonations of the rocks. Only 10 % of the mined amount was applicable for the production of “Wetz”-stones, the leftover was disposed on stockpiles. The intrinsic form and function of the “Wetz”stone was given to it in the adjacent grinding mill of the narrow gorge.

The rare forming of the rock formation in the Ammergauer mountains restore the population to a certain wealth and flourish the export trade with stones to Austria, Hungarians and other countries at the Donau. In good years more than 200000 “Wetz”-stones were sold. At that time Unterammergau had the status of the greatest “Wetz”-stone manufacturer of the surrounding area.

During the Second World War a sales slump and the end of the “wetz”-stone-manufacturing arise. Reasons for this were the new, synthetic produced “Wetz”-stones, the introduction of mowing-machines and the omission of possible markets, which belongs to the Eastern Block after the second world war. Merely the emblem of Unterammergau reminds on the good old time, in which Unterammergau was manufacturer of “Wetz”-stones.

You will find the parking lot at 47°36.594‘ E011°01.167‘ please consider, this parking area is NOT for Free. You will have to pay 0,50 Euros for two hours.

Please follow the signs indicating the way to the Geotop, which you will find starting at the parking lot. (Brown sign “Geologie erleben”). You will find the answers to all questions on the way through the “Schleifmühlklamm” on the white information panels, as well as at the destination N 47°36.343‘ E011°00.993‘.

If you reached the Geotop-sign, please follow the way through the gorge and keep left at the forest road, to get back to the starting point of your tour. If you have some time left, then take the chance to visit the “Schleifmühlen” museum. If you feel hungry, then try the guesthouse “Schleifmühle“ next to you.
