Geocache Description:

They say dead men tell no tales, but sometimes pirates were known to leave clues to the whereabouts of their treasure by the crimes that they committed. In order to find the location of the Dead Man’s Chest, you must search for the clues in the deeds of the most successful pirate of all, Bartholomew Roberts. Roberts was also known as Black Bart, and he captured far more ships than some of the most famous pirates of that era, such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd. He is estimated to have captured over 470 vessels, and some of them were claimed from maritime harbours!

Perhaps one of the reasons that Roberts was so successful, was that he was known to be very level headed and run a tight ship. He initially had his crew swear an oath on a Bible to abide by some very strict articles of conduct:

1. Every man shall have an equal vote in affairs of moment. He shall have an equal title to the fresh provisions or strong liquors at any time seized, and shall use them at pleasure unless a scarcity may make it necessary for the common good that a retrenchment may be voted.
2. Every man shall be called fairly in turn by the list on board of prizes, because over and above their proper share, they are allowed a shift of clothes. But if they defraud the company to the value of even one dollar in plate, jewels or money, they shall be marooned. If any man rob another he shall have his nose and ears slit, and be put ashore where he shall be sure to encounter hardships.
3. None shall game for money either with dice or cards.
4. The lights and candles should be put out at eight at night, and if any of the crew desire to drink after that hour they shall sit upon the open deck without lights.
5. Each man shall keep his piece, cutlass and pistols at all times clean and ready for action.
6. No boy or woman to be allowed amongst them. If any man shall be found seducing any of the latter sex and carrying her to sea in disguise he shall suffer death.
7. He that shall desert the ship or his quarters in time of battle shall be punished by death or marooning.
8. None shall strike another on board the ship, but every man's quarrel shall be ended on shore by sword or pistol in this manner. At the word of command from the quartermaster, each man being previously placed back to back, shall turn and fire immediately. If any man do not, the quartermaster shall knock the piece out of his hand. If both miss their aim they shall take to their cutlasses, and he that draweth first blood shall be declared the victor.
9. No man shall talk of breaking up their way of living till each has a share of 1,000. Every man who shall become a cripple or lose a limb in the service shall have 800 pieces of eight from the common stock and for lesser hurts proportionately.
10. The captain and the quartermaster shall each receive two shares of a prize, the master gunner and boatswain, one and one half shares, all other officers one and one quarter, and private gentlemen of fortune one share each
11. The musicians shall have rest on the Sabbath Day only by right. On all other days by favor only.

Roberts was said to be tall, dark and handsome, and he preferred to dress flamboyantly, wearing a rich crimson waistcoat and breeches, a hat with a red feather, and a diamond cross hanging from his neck.

One of Black Bart’s most famous raids took place in the harbour of Trepassey, Newfoundland, where he sailed in with black flags flying. The local sailors were so frightened that they quickly abandoned their ships. As a result, Roberts captured all of the vessels in the harbour without resistance. He was so angered by the cowardice of the captains who fled their ships, that he burned all but one. That one remaining ship, a brig from Bristol, was fitted out with 16 guns, and used as a replacement for their original sloop “Fortune”.

Black Bart amassed a fortune in treasure, but much of it was never recovered. Rumour has it that he sailed into the Bay of Fundy, hid his treasure chest in a remote location along the shore, and left behind the smallest member of his crew to guard it for all eternity! Perhaps if you can keep your wits about you and carefully seek out the clues, you might just be able to discover where his long lost treasure is hidden.

There are some that believe that Black Bart hid his treasure chest at coordinates that were significant to his infamous raid of Trepassey harbour. Those coordinates are said to be:

N 45° 06.ABC W 064° 11.DEF

Where the number of ships that Black Bart captured in Trepassey, Newfoundland is “UV” and the year that Black Bart raided Trepassey, Newfoundland is “WXYZ”.

The code:

A = W

B = X

C = U + V

D = Y

E = Z

F = X – Y

The seed coordinates provided above are actually the parking coordinates located at the shore in Summerville. From Highway #215 turn left at the Avon Emporium (wonderful food – a great place to stop for a bite to eat) and proceed down to the end of Block Wharf Road. From here you will have to walk along the shore to get to the Dead Man’s Chest. You may not be able to do this walk at high tide. You can check tide times for the area by going to DFO's website (visit link) and clicking on Hantsport.

The treasure is rumoured to include foreign coins, jewels, and other pirate loot (as well as a FTF prize). If you find Black Bart’s chest, please try to trade only pirate related items or foreign coins in order to help the Dead Man retain the value of his treasure.
