Geocache Description:

The listed coordinates mark the general location of the start of the multi.

***Oct. 19, 2011. Due to a conflict with the MITH project on MacArthur Island, I switched the final cache location and changed the final question and waypoint. The route is the same, but the final is now closer to the put-in.***

This multi is intended to be done as a relaxing 1.5-3.5 hour float trip down the North Thompson using canoes or kayaks. Motor boats could be used if you feel confident about the location of shoals and sunken posts that make motorized navigation tricky in this section. The cache can be done at any water level, but please make sure that your skill level matches the river conditions.

The access point at Harrington Road and Overlander Drive (N 50 46.524, W 120 19.795) is probably the best put-in for canoes or kayaks. The route is set up so that you take out by the boat launch at MacArthur Island. The final cache location is in the general area of the suggested put-in at Harrington, so it would make sense if you have 2 vehicles to leave one vehicle at MacArthur Island and the other at the put-in.

As you proceed downriver, you will be asked a question about something you can see from each waypoint. Answer these questions to determine the final cache location.

1) N 50 45.885 W 120 20.394

A = On the west shore, how many rusted bolts stick out immediately above the grating on the cement tower?

2) N 50 44.212 W 120 21.154

B = On the east shore, how many swallow nest openings do you see cut into the bank? 1 = none, 2 = less than 5 nests, 3 = 5 or more nests.

3) N 50 43.743 W 120 21.249

This doesn’t contribute to the final location, but if you’re inspired, suggest an imaginative purpose for the structure you see on the east bank in your log for this cache.

4) N 50 43.398 W 120 21.459

C = On the west shore, the number of windows on the east-facing wall of the small log cabin.

5) N 50 42.526 W 120 21.037

D = On the east shore, the number of holes to hook a block and tackle from on the boom at the top of this structure.

6) N 50 41.559 W 120 22.240

E = the LAST digit in the Scarborough phone number at these coordinates. (Hint: top of structure).

Plug your answers into the following formula to get the final cache location:

N 50 45. (E-C) (A+C) (E-D)

W 120 20. (A) (D) (B+D).

The final cache is on private property but it is there with the kind permission of the owners. You don't have to enter the yard to find the cache. The cache only holds a log so bring a pencil.
