Geocache Description:

If you have ever noticed the big anchor while driving down Monterey Highway, here it the story behind it.

In the mid 1800's, Alviso was the major shipping port for the San Francisco Bay, especially for agricultural cargo from the fertile Santa Clara Valley. Ships would even travel up some of local rivers to pick up their shipments. You can still see the remains of the town of Drawbridge near Alviso that allowed ships to travel up the rivers while still providing for the land routes that eventually made the port of Alviso obsolete.

Ships even used to travel up the Coyote River, long before Anderson Dam, highway bridges, and rerouting of the river bed created all the silt that made the river impassable.

The last ship to travel up the Coyote River to the town of Madrone to pick up a load of cherries was the SS Boole. Unfortunately the river was already nearly impassable and after loading the cherries onto the ship it could no longer make it back down the river. It had to unload all non-essential supplies, including one of its anchors, to make the trip back to Alviso.

That's the anchor you still see on the Monterey Highway at the northern end of Madrone (now part of Morgan Hill).

So when you see the Boole's anchor, remember this Boole Ship (BS) story.
