Prima di arrivare al Santuario di Montesenario, si può incontrare una curiosa costruzione cilindrica sormontata da una cupola, è quello che resta della Ghiacciaia di Montesenario, secondo alcuni la più grande ghiacciaia d’Italia, costruita nel 1844, con la funzione appunto di raccogliere al suo interno la neve ed il ghiaccio che si formava in alcuni laghetti vicini, ora non più esistenti. La capacità era elevata in quanto la cupola era alta 17 metri e sprofondava nel terreno per circa 15 metri, il tetto era rivestito in cotto e sulla cima si trovava una lanterna. Il ghiaccio serviva per rifornire d’estate gli ospedali di Firenze, la ghiacciaia fu abbandonata prima della guerra che le recò notevoli danni.

The capacity was really great, because the height was 17 mts and subsided in the ground for more 15 mts, the roof was imbricated and on the top was placed a lantern. The ice was used to feed in summer the hospitals of Florence, the ice-house was abandoned before the WWII which caused great damage to the structure.
