Growing up in Marple, there were a few 'hang outs' of which this is one. Many a hour was wasted here, up to no good!!
Nice bits of history dotted around the park include: the sundial, the stocks, an engraved stone from one of Samuel Oldknows mills (if I remember correctly, and spelling may be a bit suspect) and, of course, the refurbished war memorial, that has been vandalised on a number of occasions.
The park also contains the senior citizens hall, scout hut, library, (part time) police station and social services offices. Also the usual park stuff, playground for under 5s, one for over 5s, skate park and access to the canals.
Very close to the local coop to, if you need any supplies!
A new ish addition to the park is a bench, in remembrance Corporal Danny Winter, of 45 Commando Royal Marines, whom I went to Marple Hall School with. He was killed, aged 28, in an explosion in Afghanistan on 14 January, 2009.
Please take a minute or two to reflect. No matter what your views on the current conflicts, these young men and women are, far too often, paying the ultimate price.
