Geocache Description:

GeocacheAlaska! is teaming up with the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) Parks and Recreation department to provide and introduction to outdoor adventure through geocaching.

Saturday, October 3, 2009

10:00 a.m. - Noon

Kincaid Park Outdoor Center (Chalet)

Geocaching is a healthily addictive outdoor hide-and-seek adventure game played with global positional system (GPS) receivers.  Enthusiasts from GeocacheAlaska!, Inc. will instruct a two-part clinic on Geocaching with an initial classroom training session on October 3 followed by an outdoor field session on October 10.  Participants provide their own GPS.  These sessions are for all ages.  The cost is $15 payable to MOA.

The indoor classroom session will include an overview of finding geocaches online, loading coordinates into GPS units, and preparing to go afield in search of the cache itself. Gear, travel bugs, geocoins and other aspects of the game will be discussed, as well as 'etiquette' of the game and good land stewardship practices. Take-home handouts will cover details step by step, assisting in exploring beyond the introductory level.  At the end of the session, we'll move outdoors with GPS units in hand to begin our journey of discovery... ending with the 'find' of actual geocaches located close nearby the chalet. A team of experienced field assistants will be on hand to ensure everyone gets as much personal attention as necessary to make their first Geocaching expedition a success!

A follow-on group caching session (Introduction to Geocaching - Fall 2009, Session #2, GC1YPWT) will occur on Saturday, October 10, from 10:00 a.m. to noon.  This session will help new cachers gain confidence navigating across Kincaid Park's 1,400 acre 'backcountry' in search of the many geocaches hidden in the park.  Participants must bring a handheld GPS unit (a team can share), spare batteries, outdoor footwear & clothing suitable for a blustery fall day at windy Kincaid Park.  Geocaching is an all-weather all-season outdoor activity involving the entire family - however, for the first Saturday training session please leave dogs at home. Well-behaved dogs on leash are encouraged to come along on our second training jaunt on October 10!

The Northwest Trails mapset includes the Kincaid Park trails. Loading the mapset into your GPS will be helpful for navigating to the caches.

PLEASE NOTE - All travel bugs and geocoins in this event listing are placed by members of GeocacheAlaska! for training purposes. We prefer any TBs brought to the event be placed in Kincaid Park caches before or after the event, rather than logging them into this training session - Thanks!
