Geocache Description:

NORSK

Stavkyrkja vart riven i 1710.

ENGELSK

Ulvik church is situated next to the fjord at Brakanes in Ulvik centre. The church was built between 1857 and 1859, from drawings by the palace architect Linstow. In 1923, it was handsomely decorated by the local artist Lars Osa (father of the fiddler Sigbjørn Bernhoft Osa). The church was one of very few buildings left standing at Brakanes after the Second World War.

The church at Brakanes is the third church in Ulvik. The first was a stavechurch, built adjacent to the rectory in the first half of the 13th century. The stavechurch was taken down in 1710, however the beautifully carved doorposts and a painted alterfront, that shows Christ between the Apostles (considered to be one of the foremost artworks from the norwegian Middleages,) are now at the History Museum in Bergen. A chalice and the baptism font, together with a copy of the alterfront are in the church at Brakanes. In 1710, a new church was built on the plot where the stavechurch stood. This was dismantled in 1858 when the new church at Brakanes was completed.
