The cache, which is a plastic container sized 12*8*9
cm, is easy to find on the grounds of the
museum.
Dear Cache Hunter,
Let me invite you to a really lovable ‘village’, which
is very famous and popular all over Hungary and abroad too. It can
be found near Nyíregyháza, in the north-east of the country. In
this ‘village’ you can see traditional old peasant
houses of folk architecture, a church, a bell tower, a school, a
pub, a store, a graveyard, some workshops, etc. You may ask why it
can be interesting for you. Well, the strange thing is that nobody
is living there. It’s a museum, one of the best of this type
in Hungary. Its buildings come from different parts of the region.
They were taken apart into small pieces, each piece was numbered
and the buildings were rebuilt again on the site of the museum in
Sóstó. This museum is visited by thousands of tourists each year
since festivals and other programmes are often organised here when
visitors can enjoy the really special atmosphere of the place and,
at the same time, try out some of the folk traditions like dancing,
weaving or making bread and other kinds of food – just to
mention a few. So if you come to Nyíregyháza, the Open Air Museum
of Sóstó is definitely worth a visit. This is why I decided to hide
a cache here.
From the brochure of the
museum:
“Opened in 1979, it shows visitors the varied and
colourful popular architecture of North-Eastern Hungary in the
framework of a complete museum village. The exhibition areas of
five ethnographic regions – Szatmár, Rétköz, Nyírség, nyíri
Mezoség and Bereg – have been completed in the 7.5 hectare
area of the museum. In addition to them, we find curiosities here
such as the “tirpák farmhouse”, a typical building of
the Slovakian settlers who came to the town of Nyiregyhaza towards
the end of the 18th century or the group of gypsy huts on the edge
of the village. The community buildings are found in the centre of
the pulley-shaped village. The school, the bell tower, the church,
the grocery store, the pub and the fire station have already been
completed to form an enchanting group of buildings. Shows of the
old craft are regularly organised in the row of old
trades.”
A souvenir shop and a
café can also be found here to serve the comfort of visitors.
There's an open-air stage too for
performances.
