The cache is located in Murarrie somewhere on the site of the old Cannon Hill Sale-yards which opened in 1931 to service nearby abattoirs. The area has a long association with the meat industry and older residents still recall cattle being herded down the main roads to meet their fate. Cattle sales were held here until 1991 when the sale-yards finally closed and demolition commenced.
In 1996 the government sold the land for the new suburban development that exists on the site today. It is rumoured that locals pronounce Murarrie as “Merarri” (as in Ferrari) in order to make it sound more prestigious!
Many of the streets in the new development are named after towns in rural Queensland, possibly the developer’s way of paying tribute to the area’s history – who knows. For me it’s like a trip down memory lane travelling on streets named for towns that were a big part of my childhood growing up in the country.
To find the cache you will first need to take a virtual tour of country and regional Queensland to identify the name of the town located at each of the co-ordinates listed below. You will then need to find a number that is unique to each town and reduce it to just one digit (the magic number) Magic Number checksum = 69.
Once you have your list of towns and magic numbers you need to letter them from A to I down the table. But hang on a minute, there are more towns than letters I hear you say– so what’s that about???? Well it wouldn’t be much of a puzzle without a few furphies thrown in – you’ll just have to figure out which towns to keep and which ones to discard!!!
