Geocache Description:

Is this the smallest mountain in Victoria?

The Little Desert National Park is situated 375 km north-west of Melbourne. Divided into three areas, the eastern block is the most accessible, the central block is home to a Mallee Fowl sanctuary, and the western block near the South Australian border is considered to be a Remote Area.

The Desert itself could be said to be sandy and flat, but surprisingly it isn't only sand. The diverse range of soil types in the area have caused marked differences in vegetation over the area, and a wide range of plants can be seen, particularly in the spring when all the wildflowers bloom. It is also full of animal life, emus, kangaroos and of course the remarkable but elusive Mallee Fowl.

Although most of the tracks through the park are suitable for 4WD vehicles there are two sealed roads which lead through the desert from the Wimmera Highway to the Western Highway, although unfortunately the closest bitumen road is approximately 7 km from the cache. The cache itself is located at Mount Moffatt, a misnomer perhaps as it is not as high as some other locations that could be called "mountain", only 120 metres in fact! Nevertheless the view from here on a fine day is well worth the effort of getting to this spot.

The cache itself is an ammo box situated slightly off the walking track to Mount Moffatt. As this area is part of the "Little Desert Remote & Wilderness Area" and as the best access is via a sandy 4WD track; please be mindful of the environment as you plan your visit.

We think the difficulty and terrain ratings of this cache have been applied appropriately. When logging your find on line, your feedback will be extremely useful - so please add something about your Geocaching experience in your log, even just the condition of the container would help.

DON'T BE AN IDIOT 4WDriver, DO NOT DRIVE TO GZ. IT'S A WALKING TRACK.
(Logs indicate the track is protected by buried star pickets).
