Geocache Description:

Do not park on the highway. Please pull off of the road into the industrial area. You are looking for a bison tube. Be sneaky as people in the buildings nearby will be wondering what you are doing.

This is a replant of the elrojo14 classic If ya lived in Taft... that was planted back in 2006 and was semi-muggled in February 2009.

Here is the story from the first cache...

Ok, anyone from Taft knows this one. If you have no idea where Taft is, then we need some back ground.

Taft is a small town on the western edge of Kern County. Taft is known as a backwards kind of place that is full of hicks and even Oildaleans (Bakersfield’s redneck neighborhood) make fun of Taft.

The good news about Taft is the housing market is about half of what it is in Bakersfield and it is actually kind of a nice place to live, in some parts. So the Chamber of Commerce came up with a plan to advertise living in Taft. They put up these signs that say, “If ya lived in Taft…you’d be home NOW!”

These signs quickly became a point of contention in Taft. Many people thought the spelling of you as “ya” didn’t help our “hickish” image and some people even resorted to spray painting the signs to imply people in Taft use illicit drugs! (gasp) In general I find them amusing as I do live in Taft and every time I drive to work in the morning and afternoon, I have an issue with the signs because I do live in Taft and I am never home “NOW!”.

So this cache is in tribute to the Taft Chamber of Commerce and their unique signs. Someday these signs might be a distant memory, but thanks to Geocaching, their memory will never die!

In February 2009, the Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers developed the land where the cache was located. I noticed there were some surveying stakes out in the field at the old location, but I ignored them. A few days later, I drove by the cache location to find it had been scrapped over by a grader! What heartache!

Luckily, I found the cache in the grader on the far side of the field and was able to recover the travel bugs and contents. I would publicly like to thank the worker that was so kind to save my cache and not take it home with him. However, the infamous sign was gone.

Despite the great location of the original cache as a TB hotel for I-5 cachers, I just can't justify replacing the original container without an original sign. So the new cache is now located here and in a smaller container. If you are looking for a good TB hotel, I have made the Taft Highway Travel Bug Hotel to fill the void.

The old cache still sits in my garage, but the signs live on. So enjoy this find Geocachers and remember, if ya lived in Taft...you would still be out looking for this Geocache and not home now.

Sadly the Chamber of Commerce must have decided these signs had made their run and they are now all gone. I can't justify having a mediocre cache container in the middle of no where for no reason, so this one is getting archived. The good news is the memory will live on and thanks to the Internet, the signs will be imortalized forever!
