Round Barns were originally designed as coverings for horses while they walked in a circle pulling ropes to turn an engine. The first round barn in America was built by George Washington in 1792 at Mt. Vernon.
At the turn of the 1900's, the Black Brothers built a round barn at this location as a type of showplace for horses...sort of an early vehicle dealership. The road alongside the barn was named Round Barn Road. The barn suffered damage during tornado's, downbursts and wear and tear and became too expensive to repair. It was torn down in the early 1990's.
The Putnam County museum in downtown Greencastle has more history and a replica of the original round barn.
The cache is on private property but should be an easy drive-up. You won't need to walk more than 25 feet from the roadway. Don't worry about being watched. Please watch out for farm equipment.
