WHILE the nation, throughout the length of the
land, in its capitals, county -towns and villages,
is raising monuments to the dead, whereon shall
be perpetuated, in stone or bronze, the material
record of their names and deeds, another, and
perhaps a more spiritual memorial, is slowly
taking shape, tablet by tablet, through the loving
labour of pious hands, in these intimate and indi-
vidual records of so many young men, some of
them mere boys, who have laid down their lives
in the War.
HORATIO F. BROWN
There are many memorials placed around Edinburgh for those taken by the wars; this cache takes you to one of the smaller ones. Although much will be made of the text on the stone, the words above (taken from the introduction to "Henry Dundas, Scots Guard: a memoir") remind us there was far more to the fallen than a list of their names.
When you reach the monument, you will need a few numbers to locate the cache. Count the following:
- P = # of Privates, Troopers, Able Bodied seamen, Sappers and Gunners
- S = # of Bombardiers, Corporals, Lance Sergeants, Lance Bombardiers, Lance Corporals and Sergeants
- C = # of crosses
To keep you on track, C+P+S = 69. Let X = 2*C + 3*S + 3*P, and Y = 3*C + 5*S + 8*P
The cache is a short walk away at N 55 55.X W 3 15.Y.
