Geocache Description:

A beautiful memorial to the Great Famine -- both the suffering of the victims and the achievements of the survivors in Rhode Island.

On Providence's waterfront, there is a memorial to the victims and survivors of Ireland's Great Famine of 1845-1851. There is a narrative panel, stone benches for thoughtful remembrance, and flags from the United States, Eire, and Rhode Island. There is also a statue of three figures by Robert Shure.

Between 1845 and 1851, the population of Ireland was devastated by a terrible potato famine. Historians estimate that as a result of the tardy and inadequate British government response to the "great hunger," one million or more Irish men, women and children died. One and one-half million more Irish emigrated to the United States and other countries. This tragic and profoundly important event in the history of Ireland and the world should be remembered and better understood by this present and all future generations.

The Memorial's specific purpose is to provide Rhode Islanders with a deeper understanding of the effects of the "Great Famine," both on Ireland and on the thousands of emigrants who eventually came to this state.

It serves as a forceful and moving tribute to the sufferings and triumphs of those who came before us. It also preserves the memory and the historical meaning of the great Famine for future generations of Rhode Islanders of whatever ethnic or cultural background.

The landing leading into the Riverwalk Park nearby provides a fine view of the entire Memorial, and a good vantage point to see the new blue bridge downstream.

BYOPen, please.

(Note: Sadly, the "mysterious figure submerged to his neck in the river" is no longer there, having disappeared sometime in 2013, as near as I can remember.)
