Geocache Description:

A puzzle cache based on the Human Digestive System

CACHE IS NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES!!!!

The Digestive System The gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), digestive tract, guts or gut is the system of organs within multicellular organisms that takes in food, digests it to extract energy and nutrients, and expels the remaining matter. The major functions of the gastrointestinal tract are ingestion, digestion, absorption, and defecation. The GI tract differs substantially from animal to animal. The simplest form of gut consists of a single chamber with a single opening. However, most animals have guts forming a tube with an entrance at a mouth and an exit at an anus, often with several specialized sections between – some have additional complex structures such as multi-chambered stomachs or side-chambers. In an adult male human, the GI tract is approximately 6.5 metres (20 ft) long and consists of the upper and lower GI tracts. The tract may also be divided into foregut, midgut, and hindgut, reflecting the embryological origin of each segment of the tract.

The upper Gastrointestinal tract consists of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and duodenum proximal to the ligament of the buccal cavity, which contains the openings of the salivary glands; the tongue; and the teeth. Behind the mouth lies the pharynx which prevents food from entering the voice box and leads to a hollow muscular tube, the esophagus. Peristalsis takes place, which is the contraction of muscles to propel the food down the esophagus which extends through the chest and pierces the diaphragm to reach the stomach.

The lower gastrointestinal tract comprises the most of the intestines and the anus. Bowel or intestine Small intestine, two of the three parts: Duodenum - Here the digestive juices from pancreas and liver mix together Jejunum - It is the midsection of the intestine, connecting Duodenum to Ileum. Ileum - It has villi. All soluble liquid absorbs here with blood. Large intestine, which has three parts: Cecum (the vermiform appendix is attached to the cecum). Colon (ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon and sigmoid flexure) Rectum Anus

The main organs of the digestive system are: Esophagus, Stomach, Small and Large intestines, Mouth, Anus, Appendix. Other accessory organs consist of the: Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas

This Medical Terminology Cache will require that you find words by their definitions and use the letter specified as a number in the coordinates which will be thus for this cache: N 37° 40. ABC W 122° 04. XYZ To get the letter to convert into a number, use the following rules:
1. letters A through I are 1 through 9. (simple, right?)
2. letters J through Z: take the number value, add the two digits, like a checksum. For J and S: ignore the 1 in the 10, use ZERO. (example: J is 0, K is 2, L is 3…R is 9, S is 0, T is 2, U is 3…).
3. The only letter that will yield a 1 is A, remember this!

I will provide six definitions, you will need to figure out what word it is and what number the specified letter corresponds to, then plug it into the coordinates. The medical terms used come primarily from Latin and Greek. For example, cardiomyopathy is from Greek and the three parts mean “heart” “muscle” “disease”. Have fun and learn some new terms! Then go get that cache!

Order is: Letter in coordinates, Letter in word, Definition

A: letter 8: positioned or placed under the tongue, use the Greek version that starts with H, not Latin with S
B: letter 13: condition of enlarged liver and spleen
C: letter 4: adjective, pertaining to the stomach
X: letter 6: the passage between pharynx and stomach
Y: letter 4: the distal portion of the small intestine
Z: letter 4: surgical removal of the gallbladder

Cache is a good-sized jar with camo hidden a little ways off the trail. Watch your footing, there is ample leaf litter around. Please be sure to rehide it as you find it: out of plain sight!
CHECKSUM N=20 W=16
Happy Caching!
