Geocache Description:

In Battle town itself there is limited free parking or a couple of pay & display carparks. From Battle High Street take the 1066 walk past Battle Abbey towards Pevensey. The walk to the cache is on a public footpath through fields.

This is one of 5 caches by us around the historic town of Battle in East Sussex. All of which can be done individually or as a longer circular walk through both town & countryside, taking in all the sights of this historic town along the way.

In September 1066 William, Duke of Normandy brought his army to Pevensey in East Sussex & went on to defeat king Harold in the town of Battle in what many people know as the battle of Hastings. Now you can walk in the footsteps of William the Conqueror on this 1066 walk as it meanders through stunning countryside between Pevensey & Rye via the town of Battle. This generally low level walk takes you through towns & villages, over hills & through woodland, passing oast houses & windmills on the 50km route. Links with the South Saxon Shore Way at Rye to the East & the South Downs Way at Alfriston to the West provide a perfect opportunity to venture even further by connecting onto these other routes. There are also established links joining the main Pevensey /Rye route beginning from Bexhill on Sea & Hastings, thus giving the walker some flexibility in a choice of starting location.

If continuing the series you can retrace your steps back out into the High Street, which will take you through the town & back to starting location.
