Geocache Description:

This cache is a small and poorly camo-painted screw-top container. Even though it was well cleaned, Peanut allergy sufferers should probably have someone else perform the opening of the cache ceremony.

Absolutely no bushwhacking is necessary. The trails will lead you right to the cache.

Don't worry about the "Private Property" sign at the trail-head. That sign has been here longer than most of these trails which are now well used dog walk and hiking paths. The sign was likely in place to stop me and my friends (among other locals) from riding our motorcycles through the area Waaaay back. In fact, well before Panorama Rec Ctr. and the Dean Park Estates had been built, this entire subdivision was a great place for us to ride (in the 70's). Those old trails were awesome!

So, why the sign? This trail heads to what was formerly Gillain Manor, a private treatment centre for (executive) alcoholism in the mid 1970's. Then from 1985-2009 it was known as Dunsmuir Lodge, a part of the UVic. facilities. They understandably wanted a quiet and tranquil area.

The location of the cache is a pretty little grass and fern covered knoll. Here you can sit on a perfect rock and observe the planes coming and going or see the Waters of the northern part of the Saanich inlet. You might also be able to watch the development that appears to be right at the edge of the park area. Fresh flagging tape and newly cut logs indicate some sort of recent activity here. Maybe a new sub-division?
Just enjoy the location while you have the chance.

Also please be careful of the beauty of the knoll. Careless footwork may tear it up and that would be a shame. Stick to the badger-trail and replace your divots.

My caches will rarely have you move anything more than leaf litter or a single cover item to be found. In this case, only a single item need be rolled forward a bit. If you have to start knocking down logs and sticks, bringing out the shovel and roto-tiller or ripping moss from rocks then you are looking in the wrong area!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Be a responsible Geocacher, replace what you have moved and please 'Leave No Trace'.
