Geocache Description:

Water coming from the Moor loch and the Pepper mill dam ran through the Old Water Mill built during the time of the Black Colonel John Erskine of Carnock who figures.

Prominently in the civil and ecclesiastic history of Culross in 1700 he purchased at a judicial sale the estate of the earl of Kincardine and had thus became the largest landowner in the neighbourhood.

Here used to stand the village of Gateside where there was a meal mill and a saw mill,if you walk 20 metres up the burn you come to the ruins of the Old Water Wheel which job used to drive the mills.

After the water left here it continued to Donald’s Dam and on to Kilbagie Papermill which used to be one of the biggest distilleries in Scotland.

Just past The Old Water Mill in the field on your left hand side is Aarons Well where the villagers and cattle drovers drew their water from here at Gateside.

Just above Aarons Well there were 3 Wellingtonia Trees planted in Queen Victoria’s time they were planted in the shape of the Prince of Wales feathers.
The three trees are now dead, two have fallen down. The trees had grown into the iron railings which were put there to protect them when they were young.

Here also lies an old door or window lintel stone dated 1731.The engraved inscription on the stone reads. 1731 Colonel of Carnock
