Geocache Description:

A regular sized cache placed at the Red Hill Fire Tower. One of only five fire observation towers left in the Catskills.

The Red Hill Fire Tower is located within the 29,200-acre Sundown Wild Forest. The tower, which is sixty feet tall and has nine flights of stairs, was constructed in 1921. The tower is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. This tower affords an unsurpassed view of the Catskill high peaks to the west and north, and the Rondout Reservoir is visible to the southeast. It was the last fire tower staffed in the Catskills. The tower is located in the Town of Denning. Parking is located on Coons Rd (formerly Dinch Rd). It is a moderate 1.4 mile hike with an elevation change of 840 feet. Follow the yellow trail markers. On the weekends there is a volunteer at the tower who will act as a guide and teach about the history of the tower.
