Located on the edge of one of the many forgotten African-American cemeteries. Easy to drive most of the way there, last 50 yards is a trail. Cache within 50 ft. of the trail, but is not wheelchair accessible. No obvious PI in the area. There were some thorny raspberries here last fall, but you shouldn't have to enter the thorns to find the cache.
Booker T. Washington Cemetery is located in unincorporated St. Clair County, and is currently not maintained by anyone. The St. Clair County Genealogical Society has been cataloging the stones here for several years. The land was formerly privately owned, but it was seized for unpaid taxes several years ago, and is currently under the receivership of the county.
The cemetery was active from the mid-19th century until the early 1970's. The area is potentially impassable if there is heavy snow as no one actively plows these roadways.
This cache is the first in a series that will help to raise awareness of the many small, nearly abandoned, African American cemeteries in this area. Please send me a note if you want to be notified about any upcoming clean-up or restoration projects. The genealogical society organizes clean-up projects here from time-to-time.
The cache is physically located less than 50 feet off a trail which connects the cemetery to the nearby railroad right of way. The cache IS NOT on railroad property. We thought the cache was more than 50 yards from the nearest gravesite, but now that the foliage is gone, we see there are some headstones in the area, but not where cache is. Please be respectful of the cemetery as you seek the cache.
The container is a regular metal ammo box clearly labeled with a Geocaching.com sticker (again).
There is a special gift in the can for the FTF the relaunched cache.
