This cache is to pay tribute to the 1981 movie, “The Cannonball Run” and the actual event, the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. Organized by Brock Yates to protest the 55 mph speed limit then in effect in the U.S. The Cannonball was named for Ernest G. "Cannonball" Baker, who in the roaring 20's rode his motorcycle across the country. Many of the characters from the movie are based on ruses developed by real Cannonball racers over the several years that the event was run.
In this movie Burt Reynolds is an adventurer who decides to participate in an illegal car race all over the country. There is an all-star cast of racers (Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Peter Fonda, Dean Martin, Roger Moore, Sammy Davis Jr. and others) that will do anything to outrun all the difficulties (including the police) and win the race
Our Cannonball Run 2009 will consist of travel bugs connected to a host of Hot Wheels cars. All of the cars will compete in a cross-country race like in events past. The starting point is this cache located close to Interstate 40 (I-40) in Wilmington, NC. the finish line in Barstow, CA., some 2554 miles away in a cache named "SneakySnake".
Please pick-up your favorite car and move it to a cache site closer to the final destination. All cars will be listed as inventory in the cache. Each car has an attached travel bug with tracking numbers to help keep up with all of the entries. See the attached image files for a picture of the Interstate signs from Wilmington and Barstow.
