There are perfect days in Utah. They are generally in October, and they generally involve mountain terrain and maple leaves that have turned red. Thus, this cache has nothing to do with Tom Clancy, the Cold War, Soviet submarines, or nuclear missiles. It has everything to do with placing a cache on a great trail, carpeted with red maple leaves, in the middle of a beautiful Utah October afternoon. Corny, I know, but it seemed to fit. You may very well find this in the middle of June or January, but just reminisce about fall when you do.
This great, family-friendly trail starts under the Deer Ridge Bridge in the SunCrest area. There’s parking just up the hill from the bridge. I’m not sure if this is in Utah County or SL County at this point, but it is largely irrelevant.
The cache is a good-sized poly jar, camo’d with black Gorilla tape. There is an ongoing dispute among the ‘cachers in our home about the merits of Gorilla tape versus Duct tape. My boys think I am being disloyal when I use Gorilla tape. I explain that it is just a subcategory and that I’m still being true. Anyway, irrespective of that raging debate, the container is covered with black tape! It is hidden about 15-20 feet downhill off the trail, with a little bushwhacking involved (unless you are really, really short). ‘Can’t see it if you’re not looking for it; can’t miss it if you are (I hope, anyway). Please make sure to re-hide it well so it stays that way: invisible to the Infidels.
Original contents are a smattering of sophisticated swag. Not really. But there’s some fun stuff in there: Among other things, a mini led headlamp that clips on the bill of your hat; a resin replica eagle claw (you can add it to your caching totem); a new, freshly de-packaged jumbo-sized Maisto die-cast sports car (think Hot Wheels on steroids), some regular Hot Wheels, and, of course, the log book.
The FTF prize (which is actually at the bottom, in a small zip-loc) is a hand-crafted wooden pen, Montblanc style, hand-made by me and my boys, out of African Zebrawood and 10k gold trim. It’s what we do when we aren’t ‘caching. We were actually thinking of having it laser-engraved with “SanJoseBeanNazi”, but I thought that might be a little presumptuous. After all, his GPS’r is still on the fritz, so there might be a chance for someone else to seize this one. Then again, maybe not.
Good luck, and Happy Trails.
