A short distance off the main trail. Accessible all year long.
Closest place to park is the Section 16 Trail Head off Gold Camp Road. An easy stroll up the hill until your GPSr says to turn. No need to bush whack as there are plenty of casual trails leading to and around the cache.
The rock formations in this area are composed of what the geologists call "Dakota sandstone." This sandstone was laid down hundreds of millions of years ago, long before the current Rocky Mountains or Front Range. The sandstone was laid down in horizontal layers when this countryside was submerged under the ocean many times over the millenia. When the current Rocky Mountains were pushed up, the older formations, including the Dakota sandstone, were also pushed up, at angles in this area. Angled formations are often called hog backs.
The cache is in the shadow on one of the hog backs.
Congrats to Tim Usko for FTF.
