Gamla kustlandsvägen mellan Stockholm och Torneå gick över Umeälven här nedanför Backens kyrka.
Transporten över älven sköttes med en färja.
Efter Umeås tillkomst på 1600 talet ändrades vägsträckningen och det blev onödigt med omvägen förbi kyrkan.
Old coastal road between Stockholm and Torneå crossed the Ume River below the church.
Transport across the river was managed by a ferry
After Umeå advent of 1600's was considered insufficient and there was no unnecessary detour past the church.
