After murdering Lucinda Greenwood and injuring John Greenwood at the Greenwood Home on the night of February 9, 1891(HAUNTED NAPA: The Greenwood Home - GC1ZX33), William Roe and Carl Schmidt came to the Soscol House for drinks. Now known as Villa Romano, the building was once a popular inn, gambling house, brothel, and stagecoach stop. It is believed that the spirits of Roe and Schmidt, as well as many other unsavory characters, still haunt the building today.

Row and Schmidt escaped authorities for several years after their crimes at the Greenwood Home, but their respective bravado got the best of them. Schmidt bragged to an off-duty detective in Colorado about his role in the robbery and murder and was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to life in San Quentin’s “Crank’s Row” in 1892. Roe bragged to a salon keeper in San Fernando in 1896 about the Greenwood murder and robbery and was sentenced to death for his role. Roe had the dubious honor of being the last person in California history to be publicly executed. He was hung by the Napa Sheriff at 11:00am on January 15, 1897 in the Napa Town Square.

One night after closing, a worker at Villa Romano did his usual routine of checking all the doors and shutting off all of the lights before locking up the resturant for the night. He locked the front door and walked through the parking lot to their car. Met with a dead battery and a car that wouldn’t start, he decided to go back inside and call for help. As he left the car and turned toward the resturant, he noticed that all of the upstairs lights were on. Certain he‘d turned the lights off and puzzled at the sight, he stared at the window. The worker then reported seeing several dark silhouettes pass in front of the lit window of the empty building. The worker never returned to his job.

Apparitions have been seen drifting along the balcony that wraps around the northern and western sides of the second floor. Visitors who venture out onto the balcony often report feeling an unseen presence as if they are being watched by others on the balcony. Diners and employees inside the resturant have reported unexplained occurrences such as the second floor lights turning off unexpectedly or finding all the faucets in the restroom turned on. Diners have also heard doors slam without explanation as well as voices, moans, and screams from the staircase leading to the second floor.

Congrats to A Team Vallejo for first to find !
