Victory Gardens was built by the Federal Government in 1941 in
Randolph Township on 95 acres, as private housing for defense
workers at Picatinny Arsenal. The housing was meant to be
temporary, and the homes were built of cinder block. There appear
to be three styles of homes.
Square one-family homes
Rectangular one-family homes
Rectangular two-family homes (with entrances at either end.)
When the war ended, the families who lived here liked where they
were living and wanted to stay. This violated the agreement between
the Federal Government and the Township of Randolph. A referendum
passed in 1951 separating Victory Gardens from Randolph Township,
and incorporated Victory Gardens as a separate municipality.
Morris County has erected historic signs in every municipality.
Waypoint 1 brings you to the historic sign outside the Victory
Gardens Municipal Building. Waypoint 1 is located 28.8 meters from
the cache.
Victory Gardens is the smallest municipality in Morris County.
Along Salem Street, it stretches almost two blocks! I overshot the
boundary. Waypoint 2 brings you to the intersection of Salem Street
and Washington Place, which is actually in Randolph Township. Oh,
well. Waypoint 2 is located 142.3 meters from the cache.
With the exception of the two main streets (Salem Street and
Franklin Road) and the streets into the newer apartment complexes,
all of the streets in Victory Gardens are named after Presidents.
Waypoint 3 brings you to the intersection of Washington Avenue and
Washington Avenue. (Okay, it forms a large loop at the end, and
intersects itself.) Waypoint 3 is located 437.2 meters from the
cache.
Where the circles from the waypoints intersect, there will you
find the cache. Please return the cache securely into its hiding
spot.
Congratulations to biga800 and The Pugnuts for co-FTF!
