An easy (but longer) walk on a mowed path through what remains of a tall-grass prairie. PARK AT THE DESIGNATED PARKING LOCATION ONLY! Do not park at the abandoned buildings/farm lane on SR 4. This is private property and NOT part of the public access!!
The Milford Center Prairie Preserve is owned by Dayton Power and Light and managed by the ODNR, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves. DP&L has graciously granted permission to place this cache. Before being a powerline right-of-way for DP&L, this site was a railroad right-of-way and thus was never farmed as most of the surrounding countryside was. Thus, the plants that occur here are original and were present when the first settlers came to this area. It is a very significant prairie remnant of the Darby Plains. Although only 1.5 miles in length and encompassing 7 acres, the site supports at least 57 different species of prairie plants. Typical species present include big bluestem, royal catchfly, smooth rose, prairie dock, stiff goldenrod and gray-headed coneflower. The cache is available all seasons, however if you schedule your visit in late July or August you will be rewarded with the prairie being in peak bloom --thus you‘ll question whether the cache or the display of flowers is the real prize. The prairie is an ecologically sensitive area, so please exercise due care and caution. When pursuing this cache you MUST stay on the mowed path. Observe other preserve rules posted at: http://ohiodnr.com/Home/Rules/PreserveRules/tabid/874/Default.aspx PARK AT THE DESIGNATED PARKING LOCATION ONLY! Do not park at the abandoned buildings/farm lane on SR 4. This is private property and NOT part of the public access!! *Bring your own writing implement!*
