The 3 Wells of Foggie. 1 - Bronchal Well 2 - Black Spout Well 3 - Little Haven Well Aberchirder is a typical north east of Scotland 18th century planned village. What makes Foggie stand out is the fact that it has retained its 3 Wells from which the town drew its water. Many of these wells existed all over the North East, but many of them no longer exist. Foggie has not only managed to hang on to its 3 wells, but they were restored in 1988. Oh by the way, Foggieloan was the name of a croft that occupied the site approximately where the Fife Arms Hotel is now, amazingly locals still prefer this, original name after more than 200 years. Foggie Wells Circular Walk
Approx 2 miles
From the car park walk back to the road. Take the second turn on the left down a narrow road to the end and turn left, a new footpath soon comes into view going to the right and around the new houses. Bronchal well, which is probably the best preserved of the three, soon appears, tucked away on the left with a nice new wall to protect it. Continue along the new path, and it comes to an end in Walker Court-turn left. At the end turn right into Cornhill road, and take the first left into Park View, signposted to the health centre. At the end of Park View continue ahead into the alley, this leads to Taylor Drive, continue past the Fire Station, to the end of the road. The funny little grass-roofed building to your left is Black Spout Well. We couldn’t find a spot for a cache here, but wanted people to see the Well.
Now turn right into School Lane and follow it to its end, crossing two roads along the way, you will pass the old school, now ‘Bremners of Foggie’. At the end turn right into South Street ( the A97) take care here it can be busy. Views are extensive to the south-west. Cross road and take footpath to the left (signpost) opposite the Commercial Hotel.. As you walk down the footpath, look to your right and you should see another funny little grass-roofed building, this is your next destination. When you come to the cross paths at the bottom of the field, take the right turn, ignore the path sign ahead. At the end of the path turn right and you have arrived at Little Haven Well.
From here continue up the path and steps to the road. Cross the road and turn left. Continue along the footpath past the last house in the village, bear right here up the path ascending into Cleanhill Wood. At fork keep right, up hill following the rustic fence. At next fork keep left. Turn left and walk through an avenue of mature trees, at fork keep right, up hill a path joins from left and views open up to south. Keep left unless you have brought a picnic. Pass reservoir and shelter on right, at fork ahead keep left, follow path and now you’re GPS will guide you to the Well in the old quarry. Well Location is N 57 33 485 W 002 37 695
Return to the path and continue on your way keep left at fork, and follow main track. You are soon back at your car. Cache is a small lock box containing usual stuff.
