About 750 ft of steep ascent, about 1.5 miles long. Parking available at N 57 35 121 W 002 45 524 , just off minor road, off A95 , Banff – Keith road.
Knock Hill is only 1411 ft high, but it dominates the surrounding farmland and is visible for miles around. The views from the top are superlative, and 360 deg. However getting to the top is far from easy; it involves a path that climbs the east face and is extensively water damaged and steep. The saving grace is that it is comparatively short and sharp. You climb steeply but you’re soon at the top. Trust me….its worth it. It’s a small hill with a big mountain personality. Views include The Moray Firth to the north and The Grampians and Bennachie to the south.
Now, believe it or not there is an annual race from Cornhill to the summit and back, a race of some 8.5 miles. O.K don’t panic our walk involves only 1.5 miles and about 750 ft. of ascent…..easy peasy.
People have lived on this hill from time immemorial, there are hut circles marked on O.S. maps on the lower south side. Many fellow climbers have collected stones and spelled out their names on the summit.
Take all the usual precautions when climbing a Scottish Hill, stout footwear, its always muddy, and difficult underfoot. Waterproofs are a must.
Cache is a small lock box with usual bits ‘n bobs.
