Geocache Description:

The cache is one of three on a 3-hour circular trail from Olifantsbos on the western coast of the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The other caches are Olifantsbos Submarine Lookout (GC1WF3Y) and Sirkelsvlei (GC20357)

The walk is not strenuous and combines superb sea and distant mountain views, fantastic fynbos, a large beautiful secluded lake in the middle of the Cape Peninsula and some amazing weathered rock formations. This part of the reserve is not visited by the tourist buses and is often virtually deserted – so you are quite likely to have the place to yourself!

********************

To reach the cache (approx 40 minutes to the cache and 2.5-3 hours for the circuit): Park at Olifantsbos Parking area at or near S 34 15.537 E 18 22.928. Walk back approx 100m to the trail head at S 34 15.595 E 18 23.006. Follow the trail upwards a short distance to a signposted Sirkelsvlei Circular Trail junction at S 34 15.659 E 18 23.093. Here you can choose which way to do the circular route.

The following describes the clockwise route and starts by taking the left fork upwards (the details of the anticlockwise route are given in the Sirkelsvlei cache description). Follow the stony trail up and onto the top of the rocky ridge.

Continue to the yellow tipped marker stick at S 34 15.571 E 18 23.210. The trail is a little indistinct for the next 100m or so but basically head SE along the top of the rocky ridge overlooking the small valley (Die Kloof) to your left (NE).

You will soon pick up the trail again easily enough as it passes between the Window Rocks, through Lumbago Alley and along Mimetes Ridge towards the head of the valley – a favourite haunt of the Bontebok herd which lives in these parts.

You will spot your (initial?) destination from a distance – a clump of large distinctive rocks which have weathered to fantastic shapes. The trail passes right under the most fascinating one – the Koggelman Arch (no idea where the name came from or who Koggelman was!) and the location of the first of the caches on the circular route.

**********************

The cache, a small (about 150ml) cylindrical camo-container, is hidden behind a stone in a niche in the arch. Coordinate accuracy here was 3m.

**********************

From here you may either:

a) return the way you came
b) return part of the way you came but at a suitable point, rather than follow the rocky ridge, make your way down into the valley (Die Kloof) to follow the rather smoother/easier on the feet bontebok trail which emerges onto the Olifantsbos Access Road approx 400m NE of the car park.
c) continue onwards with the circuit to the lake (Sirkelsvlei) and the two further caches en route
