This cache is part of a series intended to showcase Wisconsin’s Rustic Roads (W.R.R.). Wisconsin Legislature established the Rustic Roads program in 1973 to preserve what remains of Wisconsin's scenic, lightly traveled roads.
These caches are usually hidden in the right of way at a spot of notable beauty with no bushwhacking required. Please be respectful of private property, protected lands, and the overall history of the area. Take your time, mind your speed, and most of all… enjoy your journey along the road less traveled.
This particular cache is an Altoid container hidden along Rustic Road 46, a paved road running near the Fox River in Brown County. Also known as Old Plank Road, it forms a loop west of State Highways 32 and 57. Total length is 1.3 miles.
Old Plank Road is characterized by ravines, large old trees and a narrow road surface. It dates back to Civil War times when it was used to carry supplies to the Fox River. Ironically, the onset of urban sprawl (with some huge houses on the river side) has made this road in some sections feel more like a subdivision instead of a rustic road. However, there area few sections that have remained unspoiled and retained their rustic charm.
This is a tight little road, so do your best to pull over as far as you can at GZ. Please take care with retrieving and replacing the cache to save the experience for the next cacher. Happy hunting!
