Geocache Description:

small clip lock box few swaps inside.

Donkey wood is on the border between Hounslow and Feltham. The woods are near neighbouring Hounslow Heath. Donkey wood lies on the Western bank of the River Crane and stretches from the Staines Road (A315) in the South to the Great South West Road (A30) in the North. Part of Donkey Wood is a nature reserve and is more restricted than it once was when it was just a plain wood but it remains a fascinating place and admittedly less rubbish strewn and polluted by nearby factories etc than it was a few years ago. What is most striking about Donkey wood are the ruins scattered about the place. These ruins are the remains of Gunpowder mills that once operated within the wood, powered as they were by water from the river that flows through the place. Near the Staines road entrance, there is actually an old millstone lying beside the path. Another feature of Donkey Wood is the hillocks and earthworks to be found within it. The hillocks are man made and called 'Baffle Mounds' as they were constructed to baffle explosions that I presume would occur unexpectedly from time to time as a result of messing about with gunpowder? I guess some of the earthworks, which appear to have once been channels, were constructed to divert water from the river to where it was required by the millers?.
