Near a monument recognizing the creation of Hiawatha National Forest
The Hiawatha is uniquely surrounded by 3 Great Lakes (Michigan, Superior, Huron) that afford it abundantly unique habitats for wildlife, plant species, recreation opportunities, and outstanding visuals, wildlife viewing, and scenic vegetation. Shorelines, inland lakes, and hardwoods provide closed canopy roads with outstanding visuals and Fall colors, as well as, prime berry picking as a result of vegetative treatments and burning programs.
The Hiawatha is the only National Forest to host 6 lighthouses, five of which maintain full federal ownership. The Great Lakes National Forest Niche affords unique recreation opportunities that cannot be found likewise in other National Forests.
Winter recreation in the area is as important or perhaps more important to the local economies as summer recreation. Local communities and service industries rely on the over 300 miles of snowmobile trails on the Forest to host and support winter tourism.
The Hiawatha supports a native seed greenhouse and seed program that is growing and expanding to help meet the needs of the Forest to provide native seed for habitat and restorative projects on the Forest.
The Forest has good working relationships with its publics, congressionals, industry, and businesses. Our employees are active in the schools and communities, and our service ethic has fostered healthy relationships that assist our ability to deal with issues and changes on the Forest.
