Geocache Description:

The Ira Spring Trailhead is the starting point for many classic northwest hikes including Mason Lake, Bandera Mountain, Mount Defiance and others that continue into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

Topo and Trail Map

Originally built in 1958 so fire crews could get to a large forest fire northeast of Mason Lake, it was more recently renamed to honor the great Ira Spring.

The trail begins at the end of Forest Service Road No. 9031 where there is a large parking area that can hold dozens of vehicles. Be sure to fill out a trail permit for the Alpine Lakes Wilderness (available at the trailhead) if you are hiking to Mason Lake or beyond. Note that a Northwest Forest Pass is required for each vehicle. Also, dogs are not allowed into Alpine Wilderness but are allowed to Bandera since it is outside the wilderness (map).

The Cache
The cache container was rescued off of Mount Bessemer (GCD0EA) so ignore the coordinates on the cover is a medium sized and camouflaged lock-n-lock. It's located just up the trail to the right, behind and at the base of a large tree and in the rocks.
