Geocache Description:

Located near an historical church on the Shotley Peninsular.

Car parking available at N 51°58.687 E 1°15.332.

After you have found the cache, go through the gate for the vine views. Take time to stand and ponder - so much history.

This cache is located close to an historical church on the Shotley Peninsular which has a rich naval history.
Whilst visiting this cache, take time to look around the church and the large churchyard which descends steeply towards the Orwell estuary. There are simply hundreds of military graves, mainly Royal Navy, but also some for German sailors who were killed near here. It is the last resting place to many generations of seaman, including from HMS Gypsy, which struck a mine in the river Orwell and sank.
This graveyard is one of the most haunting in East Anglia, filled with the graves of mostly teenage lads sent out by HMS Ganges and lost their lives in accidents and wars. Some of their bodies were brought back for burial, but most often these are mere memorials to young boys lost at sea.
Take the opportunity to extend your visit to Shotley Gate (look out for the passengers ferries and a possible cruise liner on the other side of the river) and on to the Marina with great views of the largest container port in Britain. The lock at the Marina is usually very active. You can relax with a drink/meal at the Shipwreck.
