Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States. Early in his political career, he gained the nickname “The Little Magician” because of his ability to use machine politics to get his cronies in key positions in government. Van Buren was the first President who was born a citizen of the United States. His presidency was hardly memorable, having inherited a poor economy. During his term, he was often criticized for his lavish parties and his taste for luxury.
