La grotte, camouflée dans une falaise calcaire, fut découverte en 1852 par Jean-Baptiste Bonnemaison. Dix sept squelettes furent alors identifiés et enterrés au cimetière.
Puis, elle fut étudiée à partir de 1860 part Édouard Lartet, un passionné de paléontologie et l'un des inventeurs de la science préhistorique.
Ses recherches du moment portaient sur les animaux antédiluviens peuplant l’Europe, et les divers ossements mis au jour lui permirent de reconstituer toute la faune de la région. Associés à des silex taillés, ils confortèrent son hypothèse d’une vie humaine contemporaine.
Site éponyme de l’Aurignacien, cette grotte est d'une grande richesse archéologique en particulier en ce qui concerne les vestiges aurignaciens.
Elle fut occupée à trois périodes différentes :
· première occupation humaine à l'Aurignacien ;
· occupation par la faune sauvage ;
· nouvelle utilisation humaine comme lieu de sépulture au Chalcolithique.
On situera l'Aurignacien entre 35 000 et 30 000 BP (Before Present) pour une approche plus simple de l'environnement dans lequel vivaient les premiers hommes du Paléolithique supérieur.
Le type humain associé à l’ Aurignacien est probablement l’ Homo sapiens (Homme anatomiquement moderne ou Homme de Cro-Magnon) (Sources : wikipedia)

There has been change and work around the prehistoric shelter! Access is now not advised by signs, for the preservation of the place. So we move the "treasure" a few meters, on the path that bypasses it. To access the cache, you will now have to go to the right and turn immediately on your left, to access the path that passes behind in height. Hint and spoiler updated. Enjoy your walk!

The cave, hidden in a limestone cliff, was discovered in 1852 by Jean-Baptiste Bonnemaison. Seventeen skeletons were then identified and buried in the cemetery.
Later, in 1860, a paleontology enthusiast and one of the inventors of prehistory as a science: Edouard Lartet started studying it.
His research focused on antediluvian animals inhabiting Europe, and various bones unearthed enabled him to reconstruct the entire fauna of the region. Associated with flints, they reinforced his hypothesis of contemporary human life.
Eponymous site of the Aurignacian, this cave is of a great archaeological richness, especially regarding Aurignacian remains.
It was occupied at three different periods:
· Early human occupation in the Aurignacian;
· Occupation by wildlife;
· New human use as a burial ground during the Chalcolithic.
The Aurignacian is placed between 35 000 and 30 000 BP (Before Present) for a simpler approach of the environment in which early humans lived in the Upper Paleolithic.
