Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the Lake Huron side of the Peninsula, south of the Hamlet of Red Bay.

This abandoned, dilapidated building was used as an ice storage shed but has not been used for over 50 years. The ice was cut in the winter, stored and pickled in sawdust that lasted well into the summer. As there was a thriving fishing industry along these "Fishing Islands" salting & pickling took place in many communities on the Peninsula with the fish shipped off as far as Detroit..
This place is also known as the "Bat-house"
There are about three pathways to the cache site, a couple can be wet and the other one is relative dry partially covered with wood chips.

Please cover the cache container again as kids play around this area too, not just Geocachers.

Harvesting ice off lakes and streams as local men had done every winter since the early 1800s. They sawed the thick layer of natural ice into long strips and then cut off large blocks.
