Geocache Description:

Known to many locals as the old cannonball factory, the historic Irondale blast furnace was built in 1863 to supply pig iron to the Confederate arsenal in Selma. The furnace facility included an ore mine, quarry, tramway, foundry, blacksmith shops, stables, and employee housing. The furnace was destroyed in March 1865 by Union forces but was rebuilt the next year and operated until 1873. It was the first Alabama iron furnace to go back into operation after the Civil War.
This geocache is a match tube lock located near the historic ruins of the old furnace.
