The construction of this working grist mill was funded by ROJAC (Redevelop Old Jasper Action Coalition). It was built on the site of two older mills and utilizes some of the original mill’s corner stones that remained at the site.
The original mill was built between 1813 and 1817 by Colonel Andrew Evans, a veteran of the war of 1812. In 1820 the Enlow family moved to the area from Kentucky and purchased the mill.
In Kentucky the Enlow family had been neighbors to the Lincoln family. Eleanor reportedly was the midwife at Abraham’s birth. Young Abe and his father Thomas visited the mill in 1828. They came from Spencer County to grind the family’s grain and barter goods for corn meal. They stayed overnight with the Enlows and returned home to Spencer County the next day.
The village became known as “Enlow’s Hill” until 1830, when the county seat was moved from Portersville. The Enlows donated 80 acres for the town site. Eleanor Enlow selected the name of Jasper from the Bible’s book of Revelation.
In 1847 the original mill was purchased by Francis and Alois Eckert who immigrated to the area from Pfaffenweiler, Germany, along with several other families that year. This connection is still alive today through a “sister cities” partnership.
The Eckert’s built a second mill on the site in 1865 with the first being destroyed in 1870. The second mill remained in operation until 1933. A flood in 1964 weakened the foundation leading to its razing.
You are looking for a medium sized lock-and-lock container with a log book, pen and a few small items for trade. This is a high traffic area at time so stealth is a must. Please place back just as you found it.Have fun and enjoy!
Congrats to Odyssey Posse for being the FTF!
