Geocache Description:

The cache is located inside a medium-sized storage container. This spot is part of the Holtwood Arboretum, which showcases 47 species of trees and is one of the many opportunities for nature study on lands owned by PPL at Holtwood and Lake Aldred. Many of the trees may also be seen in their natural habitat at company recreation areas and in surrounding woodlands.

Just down the hill from the garden of trees is the Holtwood hydroelectric plant, which has been generating electricity since 1910. It currently generates 108 megawatts using the power of the water held back by a 55-foot-high dam. The dam creates Lake Aldred, an 8-mile reservoir that provides opportunities for boating, fishing and other public recreation.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved a request by PPL Holtwood to add 125 megawatts of clean, renewable electric generating capacity at the plant. The estimated $440 million project would add enough new renewable energy generation to power 100,000 homes and create nearly 200 construction jobs.

The expansion project would also improve the Holtwood fish lifts. Among the largest in the nation, the fish lifts enable migrating shad to continue their annual spring journey up the Susquehanna River. The lifts are capable of helping tens of thousands of fish over the dam each season.

Also, keep your eyes to the sky for the resident bald eagles that nest along the river. While in the area, don’t forget to visit the Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve. It is one of the most impressive wildflower areas in the eastern United States and certainly one of the most popular natural locations in Lancaster County. PPL takes pride in preserving the glen as a wildflower sanctuary and has created a hiker’s haven with over 5,000 acres around the preserve. There are 39 miles of trails around Lake Aldred that lead to scenic overlooks, historic sites or wooded areas that are unique for their forest growth.
