Geocache Description:

Dick Johnson Township Volunteer Fire Department
Established January 1, 1957

NOT ON TOWER, Stay off the tower please. You do have permission to be on the property, just please don't climb on the tower.

In the spring of 1956 several local residents began discussing the need for a local fire department. They had been paying the City of Brazil for fire protection, but much of the township was too far away to be served adequately. The residents, in cooperation with the township trustee, began to circulate petitions and found overwhelming support for the idea of a volunteer, township owned, fire department. As a result, the Dick Johnson Township Volunteer Fire Department became Indiana's first fire department formed entirely by a rural area outside any city, town or village. The fire department officially began January 1, 1957. The first fire truck arrived February 20, 1957, fully equipped and ready to roll. The contract with Brazil City expired March 5, 1957 and the first call came into the new fire department on March 10, 1957 as a brush fire along Perth Road. The first structure fire was a house on April 15, 1957. The house was saved, and the firemen passed their first real test.
