Geocache Description:

One of the reasons I like geocaching is finding new areas that I didn't know about before. I've driven by this place many times, but never stopped to really check it out until recently. Fascinating. So I thought I'd put a cache here to share the area.... The old Fort Lowell (El Fuerte) Cemetery (El Campo Santo de El Fuerte) served the local community. The graves there, from modern carved stones to simple concrete and wooden crosses, date from the early 1920s and attest to the simple lives and modest means of the residents. The interment use of the historic cemetery, owned by the OFLNA is, by tradition, for the descendants of the people of the village of El Fuerte. The cemetery is managed and maintained by those descendants. Visits and picnics at El Campo Santo are typical of days such as Mother’s Day and El Día de Los Muertos. Old El Fuerte neighborhood was designated an Historic District in 1979, and is a reminder of our hard-scrabble agrarian past, and our close ties to Mexico. The Old Fort Lowell Neighborhood continues to draw many visitors to this unique area.
