The Bennie Railplane. Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

clachanman: Groundworks apparently to do with a new railway station now mean it is impossible to access the cache, this is not likely to change in the near future, with regret I will have to archive this great wee piece of history, I am also unable to retrieve the cache.

Geocache Description:

***PARK AT ALLANDER SPORTS CENTRE....PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION FOR ROUTE TO GZ***
A very quick and easy cache taking you to the site of the amazing Bennie Monorail built in 1930 and sadly broken for scrap in about 1955. Not very scenic but a great piece of history. See the links in description for more information........** Not suitable for young children as a working railtrack is nearby.** Please keep dogs on a lead.

***PLEASE KEEP TO THE PATH, do not go near the
railway tracks*** . . . . . . . . . . . Looking like
something from a Flash Gordon movie this futuristic working
overhead monorail was built in 1930 as a testing track, sadly some
twenty years later it lay rusting until scrapped in the mid
fifties, see links below for amazing clip, info. and
pictures...Parking for this cache is at the Allander Leisure
Centre, park over to the left of the centre near the recycling
bins. Signal is poor in woods so be sure to read description. Walk
out the North East corner of the car park (try to ignore the litter) near the bins and cross
the stream between the metal handrails over an old railway bridge,
looking to your left you will see the back yard of Kelvin Timber,
this building was once a railway goods depot, turn right along a
small path through trees following the disused railway embankment
coming from the goods depot, follow this path as it swings left
till you are near coords, take a sharp left at an opening to the
bottom of a steep bank towards your goal, you should now be
standing next to what I believe is one of the concrete pads which
supported the overhead gantry for the railplane. A close look at
the pad shows where the metal gantry leg was gas-axed from the top
to be taken away for scrap.
