This cache is found on the Shongweni Dam and Game Reserve, which has an entrance fee of R30 per person plus a R3 community levy per vehicle.

The reserve is 17 000 hectares in size and offers fine examples of many habitats including grasslands, valley, bushveld and spectacular cliffs. The reserve is home to 2 of Africa's Big Five, buffalo and rhino and also includes Giraffe, Waterbuck, Warthog, Kudu, Wildebeest and other game.

The co-ordinates above will take you to the gate of the reserve. In order to find this cache you will have to solve Mhambi’s riddles.

The Story

In a time before man wrote history, there was a brave hunter by the name of Mhambi who lived north of the mighty Thukela river. But his tribe and lands were attacked and destroyed by a larger tribe of warriors who sent the remnant of Mhambi’s people fleeing to all corners of the province.

Without a family or a tribe, Mhambi had to find a new purpose in life and he set off on a journey in search of treasure he had heard of as a child.

Mhambi remembered the nights around the fire when his grandfather would tell the wonderful story of the treasure which had been cunningly hidden in the hills of Shongweni by sangomas who had used all their magic to conceal it from the people of the area who walked past it every day, seeing it but not seeing.

After many days of travel, Mhambi arrived in the hills of Shongweni (at a spot not very far from the GPS co-ordinates above) and encountered a sangoma. The sangoma laughed at Mhambi when he told her that he had come seeking the treasure. She said he was on a fool’s errand and that he was not wise or patient enough to find the treasure. As she was walking away shaking her head, she turned back and said to the young man:

“Go to the place where Bheka Ntshonalanga feasted on the ground. From here you will have to seek out Ntini’s signpost. Remember that the rumours that the dam has red herring in it are not true. ”

Then the sangoma was on her way again. Mhambi called after her, “Are there not more hints you can give me?”
