La località Poppiano, come ricorda il toponimo, risulta abitata fin dai tempi dei romani, e fu probabile sede di una famiglia romana appartenente alla gens Papia o Poppeia. Nel periodo medievale la località divenne feudo dei Conti Alberti di Certaldo ai quali è attribuita la costruzione del Castello – e in seguito, come si rileva da un atto di eredità del 1199, a una delle famiglie più potenti della Toscana, i Guicciardini. La famiglia dei Guicciardini ebbe fin dal 1200 un ruolo importante nella vita sociale, politica ed economica di Firenze e della Toscana.
Il Castello di Poppiano era una possente costruzione medioevale con un triplice giro di mura costruito intorno all'anno mille come fortezza a difesa esterna di Firenze. Purtroppo venne più volte saccheggiato e distrutto nel corso dei secoli, dalle truppe armate in lotta contro Firenze. Fu qui che si accampò nel 1369 dopo la battaglia di Fosso Armonico, vicino a Cascina, Giovanni Acuto (John Hawkwood, il famoso Condottiero di Ventura Inglese).
In seguito, il Castello di Poppiano fu in parte rovinato nel 1529 durante l'assedio di Firenze, come ricorda Francesco Guicciardini nelle Memorie. Verso la metà del XVI secolo il Castello di Poppiano divenne il luogo di villeggiatura di Vincenzo Borghini, filologo e storico toscano, attivo a Firenze alla corte di Cosimo I de' Medici e di suo figlio Francesco I. Egli amava incontrarsi proprio a Poppiano con alcuni fra i più importanti personaggi dell'epoca quali il pittore, architetto e letterato Giorgio Vasari. Nel corso dei secoli il castello di Poppiano ha subito molteplici rifacimenti, il più consistente dei quali venne effettuato a seguito di un terremoto che distrusse la torre tra il 1811 e 1815. Oggi, come fin dalla sua costruzione, il Castello di Poppiano con la vicina Chiesa di San Biagio, è situato su un'altura collinare che ospita un caratteristico insediamento abitativo fatto di vicoli, mura, finestrelle e scorci unici. Da qui si può godere di una panoramica unica e insostituibile del paesaggio circostante, ricco di vegetazione, vigneti e oliveti, tipici della campagna toscana. Il castello è privato ed è sede di una rinomatissima azienda agricola che produce vino e olio. L'interno è visitabile solo mediante tour organizzati e su prenotazione.

Poppiano, as it remembers the name, was probably a roman center pertaining to gens Papia or Poppeia. In the medieval period the locality become a property of Counts Alberti of Certaldo to which the construction of the Castle is attributed - and later on, like is found from an action of inheritance of 1199, to one of the more powerful families of the Tuscany, the Guicciardini. The Guicciardini family since 1200 had a important role in the social, political and economic life of Florence and the Tuscany. The Castle of Poppiano was a powerful medieval construction with a triple turn of walls around constructed more or less in the Xth sec. like a fortress to external defense of Florence. Unfortunately it came many times over plundered and destroyed in the course of the centuries, from the armys in fight against Florence. It was here that John Hawkwood, the famous English soldier camped in 1369 after the “Fosso armonico” battle, near “Cascina”. Later on, the Castle of Poppiano partially was ruined in 1529 during the siege of Florence, as Francisco Guicciardini in the Memories remembers. Towards the half of XVI the century the Castle of Poppiano divenne the holiday place of Vincenzo Borghini, a Tuscan man of letters and historian in Florence at the court of Cosimo de' Medici and of his son Francesco I. It loved to meet own to Poppiano with some between the more important personages of the age as the painter, architect and man of letters Giorgio Vasari. In the centuries the castle of Poppiano quickly has multiple reconstructions, more consisting of which it came carried out as a result of an earthquake that destroyed the tower between 1811 and 1815. Today, like since its construction, the Castle of Poppiano with the near Church of Saint Biagio, is situated on a hill that receives a characteristic village made of alleys, walls, little windows and beautiful landscapes. From here you can enjoy an only, panoramic an irreplaceable sight of the surroundings, rich of vegetation, vineyards and olive groves, typical of the Tuscany campaign. The castle is private and its a center of well a known agricultural company that produces wine and oil. The internal of the castle is visitabile only by organized tours and by reservation.
